Treating addiction is difficult and requires great commitment and determination from the addicted person. But successful treatment of addictions is possible. Many addictions need specialist treatment and some addictions require longer-term residential care. Coming off long-term use of certain substances (like heroin and alcohol) can be life-threatening and may require medical support.

Addiction counselling can help identify whether a person has an addiction and can explore the underlying causes of addictive behaviour. In therapy, an experienced therapist would help the client recognise the thought, feeling and behavioural patterns that contribute to the addiction. And there are techniques available to help clients regain control over their lives.

Addiction problems can break up families, damage communities and destroy lives. In some ways, addiction touches us all.
