These statistics do not necessarily indicate that relationships are less important to people. In fact, they could suggest that relationships are more important as people seek to find fulfillment through relationships with more than one partner.
Because relationships are so important to us and because human relationships are complex, much has been written about ways to improve or sustain relationships. Couples often find problems communicating so that issues around behaviour or unfulfilled needs are not appropriately expressed. For all UK divorces granted in 2008, behaviour was the most common reason given.
It is a misconception that people only seek counselling for relationship problems within intimate, sexual partnerships. While couples (straight and gay) are the most likely clients for relationship therapy, people sometimes seek help with relationship problems within families, within friendships or with colleagues. It’s reasonable to suggest that wherever people come together there will be potential for miscommunication, anger, frustration, disappointment and hurt.
